Unprecedented Arrests: Nigeria detains Polish nationals for raising Russian flags during protests

By Ope Adetayo

In a shocking turn of events, Nigeria has arrested seven Polish nationals for raising Russian flags during anti-government protests in Kano. The protests, which have been ongoing since August 1, are in response to President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms that have led to the end of petrol and electricity subsidies, currency devaluation, and soaring inflation.

Security services detained the individuals responsible for making the banners with the Russian flags, highlighting concerns about increased Russian activity in western Africa. The Polish consul to Nigeria, Stanislaw Gulinski, confirmed the arrests and mentioned that the individuals were being transported to Abuja.

Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has condemned the display of foreign flags during protests as a “treasonable offence.” The protesters in various northern states were seen waving Russian flags and some even called for a military takeover.

The Russian embassy in Nigeria has denied any involvement in the protests. This incident underscores the volatile situation in Nigeria and the potential implications of foreign interference in domestic affairs.
