Officials from the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced on Tuesday that they will be ramping up bird flu testing of beef entering the food supply in response to the current outbreak among dairy cattle. Starting in mid-September, the USDA will be conducting additional tests and has urged livestock workers to stay alert. So far, nearly 200 herds in 13 states have been affected by the virus since March when it spread from wild birds to cows, according to USDA data.

Earlier this year in May, the USDA tested 109 beef samples from dairy cows sent for slaughter and found bird flu virus particles in one cow’s tissue sample. This is particularly concerning as older dairy cattle are often used for meat production.

Eric Deeble, an under secretary for marketing and regulatory programs, expressed confidence in the current testing procedures conducted by dairy farmers across the nation. “I do feel that the response is adequate,” he stated.
