President Joe Biden’s administration announced a significant investment of $7.3 billion from the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act to support clean energy projects led by rural electric cooperatives. This move aims to reduce energy costs and improve reliability for rural Americans, who often face higher energy expenses.

The funding will finance 16 projects, with the first project allocating nearly $573 million to Dairyland Power Cooperative in La Crosse, Wisconsin. This investment will enable the installation of four solar and four wind power projects across Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, and Illinois.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack emphasized the impact of these investments, stating, “One in five rural Americans will benefit from these clean energy investments, thanks to partnerships with rural electric cooperatives like Dairyland. Put simply, this is rural power, for rural America.”

The projects, supported by the IRA’s Empowering Rural America (New ERA) program, are expected to reduce over 43 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually and create more than 4,500 permanent jobs along with 16,000 construction jobs, according to the White House.

Rural electric cooperatives play a crucial role in serving 42 million people, as highlighted by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.

In a related effort, the administration previously announced a $2.2 billion investment to modernize the nation’s power grid, addressing challenges posed by extreme weather events and the increasing demand for power from data centers.

President Biden and Secretary Vilsack are scheduled to unveil this funding initiative in Westby, Wisconsin, showcasing the government’s commitment to advancing clean energy solutions and supporting rural communities.
