In a remarkable display of teamwork and dedication, a humpback whale was rescued off the western coast of Canada after a harrowing four-day struggle. The heartwarming rescue mission, captured on video, was led by a team from Fisheries and Oceans Canada Marine Mammal Rescue.
The whale had become entangled in over 50 ropes, fishing gear, and floats, rendering it unable to open its mouth or move freely. Paul Cottrell, marine mammal coordinator for Fisheries and Oceans Canada, described the situation as unprecedented, stating, "I’ve never seen anything like it."
The heroic effort to free the distressed whale took place between September 2nd and 6th while Cottrell was conducting a necropsy on a deceased fin whale in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. Equipped with all necessary tools and expertise, the team located the entangled humpback whale and successfully released it from its constraints.
The successful rescue was credited to the collaborative efforts of the rescue team and provincial fishery officers, showcasing the importance of swift and effective action in saving marine wildlife.

Whale Entanglements on the Rise
Data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reveals a concerning trend of increasing large whale entanglements along the West coast of the United States. In 2007, nine entanglements were reported, a number that surged to 46 in 2015. Although there was a slight decrease in 2020, the figures rose to 20 in 2021 and 26 in 2022.
Overall, there were 67 large whale entanglements across all U.S. coasts in 2022, highlighting the pressing need for conservation efforts and proactive measures to protect marine life.
