Current Situation: Dozens of Wildfires Engulfing Portugal

Portugal is currently facing over 50 active forest fires, predominantly concentrated in the northern and central regions of the country. In response to this crisis, more than 5,000 firefighters, civil defense personnel, and soldiers have been deployed to combat the fires.

  • 21 firefighting planes and helicopters are actively engaged in firefighting efforts.
  • European Union partners have dispatched eight firefighting planes to assist Portugal, with two planes each from Spain, Italy, France, and Greece.
  • Authorities have closed several highways and suspended train services in the affected areas.

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro has issued a warning, emphasizing the challenging days ahead and the need for thorough preparation to combat the wildfires.

Heightened Risk: Portugal Braces for Severe Fire Conditions

The recent outbreak of wildfires in Portugal has been exacerbated by soaring temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, combined with strong winds that have fueled the flames.

Jorge Ponte from the meteorological agency IPMA described Monday as “one of the worst days ever” in terms of fire risk in Portugal. The extreme conditions, including high temperatures, powerful wind gusts of up to 70 kilometers per hour, and low humidity levels, have been attributed to an anticyclone.

Despite experiencing fewer fires than usual earlier in the year due to increased rainfall, Portugal and neighboring Spain remain susceptible to the impacts of climate change, characterized by hotter and drier conditions.

Our hearts go out to the brave firefighters risking their lives to combat these devastating wildfires, and we stand in solidarity with the people of Portugal during this challenging time.
