Luxembourg’s schools boast a diverse student population, with nearly 40% of students holding foreign nationalities. The latest data from the Education Ministry reveals that over 45,000 pupils were enrolled in the 2023/24 academic year.

Breakdown of Student Enrollment

Most students attend ‘classical’ secondary school

Last year, 17,932 students (39.5%) attended a ‘classical’ secondary school in Luxembourg. This type of institution focuses on humanities and natural sciences. Half of these students have Luxembourgish nationality, while the rest have dual or various foreign nationalities.

Foreign students in ‘general’ secondary school

Approximately 40% of all students in ‘general’ high schools, which emphasize crafts and tech, do not hold Luxembourgish nationality. Out of the 17,400 children in these schools, a significant portion have diverse nationalities.

Vocational training statistics

Nearly 14% of all students are undergoing vocational training. The data shows a mix of students with only Luxembourgish nationality and those with dual nationalities.

Categorization of Nationalities

The Ministry categorizes students into four groups based on nationality. These categories help in understanding the diverse student population in Luxembourg.

  • Children with only Luxembourgish nationality
  • Children with Luxembourgish nationality and another nationality
  • Children with a foreign nationality
  • Children with two foreign nationalities

Combining certain categories gives us a total enrollment of 45,385 children during the 2023/24 academic year.
