“We did not take this decision lightly, as it is our duty to preserve the German railway heritage,” explained DB Museum Director Oliver Götze.
Several clubs from across Germany expressed interest in the train, but due to the damages, someone with operational knowledge and resources for its transfer, preservation, and restoration was needed. Götze stated, “With IntEgro, we have succeeded in finding the right fit. I have no doubt about its future.”
Restoration by 2035
Martin Engwicht, the Managing Director of IntEgro, aims to preserve the “Blitz” for the long term. He emphasized, “The VT 08.5 is a valuable railcar for German railway history and, as the last of its kind, deserves protection.”
While the purchase price remains undisclosed, restoration costs were estimated to be in the millions several years ago. The goal is to showcase the VT 08.5 in its former glory by 2035 as part of the 200th anniversary celebrations of German railways.
The new location remains undisclosed to protect the train from vandals. According to BILD sources, it is safely hidden under a secure roof somewhere in the Spreewald, Brandenburg.
