Tropical Storm Helene is rapidly intensifying in the eastern Gulf of Mexico and is expected to become a hurricane within the next two days, posing a threat of life-threatening storm surge to Florida.
More than 40 million people in Florida, Georgia, and Alabama are under hurricane and tropical storm warnings as Helene moves northwest near the Yucatan Peninsula, according to the National Weather Service.
Evacuations are being ordered along Florida’s Gulf coast, with Sarasota and Charlotte counties among those affected. School closures have been announced in dozens of counties, including Hillsborough and Pinellas counties.
Pinellas County officials have ordered evacuations of long-term healthcare facilities near the coast, including nursing homes and assisted living centers, as the storm approaches.
“Now is the time to prepare, review your hurricane plan, and ensure that you are executing your hurricane preparedness plan,” stated Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Helene currently has wind speeds of 70 mph (160 kph) and is expected to become a hurricane as it moves over the warm waters of the Gulf. Forecasters predict that it will rapidly strengthen and reach major hurricane status before making landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region south of Tallahassee.
A major hurricane, classified as Category 3, 4, or 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, has the potential to cause devastating damage.
The storm is forecasted to bring a life-threatening storm surge of up to 15 feet (4.6 m) and could dump up to 15 inches (38.1 cm) of rain in some areas, leading to flash and urban flooding. Residents in the storm’s path are advised to prepare for potential power outages lasting up to a week, according to Florida emergency officials.
