Sabah’s Commitment to Affordable Housing
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has announced that Sabah is dedicated to building an additional 3,000 homes for the hardcore poor and lower-income families in the coming year. These Rumah Mesra SMJ affordable homes aim to provide assistance to families and individuals who do not currently own a home.
Previous Allocations
The state government had previously allocated 20 SMJ houses for each of the 73 state constituencies in Sabah. However, starting next year, this allocation will be doubled to further aid those in need.
Request to Federal Government
Hajiji has formally requested the Federal Government to allocate 5,000 units of affordable housing under the people’s housing programme (PPR) scheme for Sabah. This allocation is crucial in addressing the housing needs of communities, especially those in lower income groups.
The proposed distribution includes 1,000 units each for Tawau and Sandakan, with 3,000 units allocated for Kota Kinabalu. This commitment aims to ensure that every qualified Sabahan has access to affordable and quality housing.
