The Science Behind Politicians’ Behavior

According to brain researcher Troels W. Kjær, politicians’ erratic behavior can be attributed to the fatigue of the brain’s cortex, which controls conscious processes after hours of debate.

Deeper in the brain, unconscious processes take over, leading to decreased concentration, lack of focus, and heightened emotions.

It is natural for politicians to become more irritable during late hours, as primitive thoughts come to the forefront, sometimes escalating to physical altercations in certain parliaments.

The Benefits of a Power Nap Over Sweets and Coffee

Many politicians bring candy bags to the chamber during lengthy opening debates, a tradition observed by parties like Enhedslisten.

Folketing member Victoria Velasquez (Ø) shares, “Our group leader prepares candy bags with personal messages for us, which we keep in our desk drawer.”

However, Kjær believes candy bags are not a good idea.

He explains, “Various substances can stimulate the brain, such as sugar, coffee, or amphetamines, but I do not recommend any of them.”

Instead, he suggests that taking a power nap occasionally can be beneficial.

He adds, “It could be very beneficial unless something crucial happens in the chamber that requires immediate attention. That’s the risk. When will the important matters be addressed? Is it at the 16th hour?”

Analysis:

– **Brain Fatigue**: The brain’s cortex tires after prolonged debates, leading to decreased focus and heightened emotions.
– **Unconscious Processes**: Deeper in the brain, unconscious processes take over, affecting politicians’ behavior during late hours.
– **Power Nap Benefits**: Taking a power nap is more effective than relying on stimulants like sugar or coffee to maintain alertness.
– **Risk of Missing Important Matters**: While a power nap can be beneficial, there is a risk of missing crucial developments in the chamber during long sessions.
