Federal Government Allocates RM268mil for Sibu Flood Mitigation Project

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof Announces Funding Details

The Federal Government has allocated RM268 million to the completion of the first three phases of the Sibu Flood Mitigation Project. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof revealed the funding details during a press conference after a project briefing on Sunday.

Phases of the Project:

• Phase One and Two: Completed in 2015 at a cost of RM83 million
• Phase Three: Completed in December 2023 for RM85 million
• Phase Four: Sarawak government approves RM120 million for this state-funded phase covering 618 hectares in the Bukit Assek area
• Phase Five: Slated to proceed under the 13th Malaysia Plan’s rolling plan at a cost of RM500 million
  

  Importance of Flood Mitigation Efforts in Sibu
  

  Fadillah highlighted the necessity for flood mitigation efforts in Sibu due to its vulnerability to flooding. Factors contributing to this vulnerability include Sibu’s low-lying position, proximity to rivers like Batang Rajang and Batang Igan, and the challenge of the town being situated on peat soil.

• Risk Reduction: Upon completion of Phase 5, the project is expected to significantly reduce the risk of flooding in Sibu
• Population Safeguarding: Over 100,000 residents in more than 2,100 hectares will be safeguarded, including key areas such as commercial and industrial zones, infrastructure facilities, and schools
  

  Integrated River Basin Management Plan for Batang Rajang Basin
  

  In addition to the Sibu Flood Mitigation Project, Fadillah mentioned the ongoing study on the Integrated River Basin Management (IRBM) Plan for the Batang Rajang Basin. This RM3.8 million study, started on September 1, 2023, aims to strategically plan river basins to ensure adequate and clean water supply, diminish the risk of flooding, and promote sustainable environmental conservation.
