Connecting with the Stars: Malaysian Students Speak Directly to NASA Astronaut in Space
Unforgettable Experience at the National Planetarium
Ten lucky students from Sekolah Kebangsaan Sultan Hisammudin Alam Shah, Kuala Lumpur had the incredible opportunity to speak directly with NASA astronaut Captain Sunita Williams, who is currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS). This once-in-a-lifetime experience took place during the "ISS Contact 2024" program held at the National Planetarium, providing a unique and inspiring experience for children ranging from Year One to Year Six.
Communication Beyond Borders
During the event, the students had the chance to communicate directly with Captain Williams over an Amateur Radio Station. This communication lasted for an impressive nine to ten minutes, bridging the gap between Earth and the ISS, which orbits at a distance of 300km to 435km from the Earth’s surface at a speed of 26,700km per hour. This interaction aimed to ignite the students’ interest in space exploration and inspire them to dream big.
A Glimpse into Space Science and Climate Change
The ISS Contact 2024 program is an annual event held in conjunction with the 24th World Space Week, organized by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation from October 4 to 10. Apart from the direct communication with Captain Williams, students were also introduced to the field of radio technology used at the Amateur Radio Station to study global climate change. This hands-on experience aimed to encourage students to explore radio technology, understand space science, and grasp the implications of climate change for our planet’s future.
Inspiring Future Innovators
Mohd Zamri Shah Mastor, the senior principal assistant director of the National Planetarium, highlighted the importance of programs like ISS Contact 2024 in sparking curiosity and passion for space exploration among students. By providing real-world experiences and insights into cutting-edge technologies, such initiatives aim to nurture the next generation of innovators and scientists.
As we delve deeper into this captivating event that brought Malaysian students closer to the stars, it is evident that such programs play a crucial role in shaping the minds of our youth and inspiring them to reach for the stars. By fostering a love for science, technology, and exploration, we pave the way for a brighter future filled with endless possibilities and discoveries.
