The Importance of Transparent Communication

The claim that four out of five homeowners will benefit from lower taxes under the new property tax system has been a central part of the tax authorities’ communication strategy. This assertion has been used time and again by various tax ministers to justify discrepancies in property valuations.

For over a year, DR News has been trying to obtain the key calculations from the Tax Ministry, but to no avail.

However, after a complaint to the Parliamentary Ombudsman, there was a breakthrough in the case last week.

Surprisingly, the Tax Ministry did not possess the calculations that substantiated the claim, prompting criticism from the Ombudsman.

“The magnitude of property taxes is of significant importance to a large number of citizens. Furthermore, the Tax Ministry has made the statement that ‘4 out of 5 will receive a tax reduction in 2024’ a cornerstone of its communication to homeowners,” said Parliamentary Ombudsman Niels Fenger.

“In light of this, it is unfortunate, in my opinion, that the Tax Ministry did not seek to substantiate such a crucial announcement regarding the impact of a legislative proposal,” he added, while also noting that the case did not undermine trust in public authorities.

Despite this, the Ombudsman stated that he had no reason to doubt the accuracy of the claim, which he did not investigate.
