DBKL Activates Operations Room to Monitor Floods in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has taken proactive measures to monitor potential flood incidents across the city. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa announced the activation of an operations room dedicated to overseeing flood-prone areas.

Monitoring and Prevention

  • The operations room is equipped with personnel monitoring CCTV cameras to detect any rise in water levels in identified flood hotspots.
  • Among the 24 flood hotspots in Kuala Lumpur are Jalan Pudu, Jalan Sultan, Dato’ Onn Roundabout, Jalan Peel, Jalan Maharajalela, and Jalan Genting Klang.
  • Immediate action will be taken upon detecting a rise in water levels to mitigate potential flood risks.

    Swift Response to Flood Incidents

  • Flash floods in the identified hotspots were attributed to heavy rainfall, reaching up to 118mm per hour.
  • Flood mitigation efforts included the activation of five pumps across the capital and traffic control measures by the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department.

    University Malaya (UM) Incident

  • Despite the flood at UM, no student residents were affected as mitigation efforts were promptly managed.
  • The university has its own flood warning system in place to ensure the safety of its residents and property.

    Maintenance and Future Prevention

  • Debris and blockages in affected areas need regular maintenance to prevent flooding incidents.
  • The retention pond in the UM area, with a capacity of 16,000 cubic meters, requires desiltation to increase its efficiency in managing heavy rains.

    Conclusion

Dr Zaliha Mustafa’s comprehensive approach to flood monitoring and prevention in Kuala Lumpur showcases the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents. By implementing proactive measures and addressing maintenance issues, the city aims to reduce the impact of future flood incidents and protect its infrastructure.

This proactive stance not only safeguards the city’s residents but also contributes to the overall resilience and sustainability of Kuala Lumpur. Investing in flood prevention measures is a crucial step towards building a more secure and stable urban environment for all.
