Breaking News: Hurricane Oscar to Hit Guantanamo or Holguin in Cuba, Threatening Power Restoration Efforts

Hurricane Oscar is on track to reach Guantanamo or Holguin in Cuba later today, posing a new threat to the island country’s efforts to restore power following its recent blackout crisis, as reported by the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

The storm is currently positioned approximately 115 miles east-northeast of Guantanamo, Cuba, with sustained winds of up to 80 mph, according to the Miami-based forecaster.

Cuba’s government managed to restore power to nearly one-fifth of the population, totaling 2 million people, after the national grid experienced two major collapses within 24 hours.

Prior to heading towards Cuba, Hurricane Oscar made landfall on Great Inagua island in the Bahamas earlier today.

While the NHC anticipates Oscar to weaken post-landfall in Cuba, it is likely to maintain its status as a tropical storm as it progresses north of Cuba by late Monday and towards the central Bahamas on Tuesday.

Heavy rainfall is expected in eastern Cuba, with estimates ranging from 5 to 10 inches and isolated amounts up to 15 inches through Tuesday, according to the NHC.

The Bahamas government has lifted the tropical storm warning for the Turks and Caicos Islands, while hurricane warnings remain in effect for the Southeastern Bahamas and the north coast of the Cuban provinces of Holguin, Guantanamo, and Las Tunas.

Analysis: Hurricane Oscar poses a significant threat to Cuba, where the government is already grappling with power restoration efforts after a major blackout. The storm’s impact could further disrupt daily life and infrastructure, potentially leading to extended power outages and damages. Residents in the affected areas should stay alert, follow safety guidelines, and prepare for potential evacuation orders. The financial market may also experience fluctuations as the region deals with the aftermath of the storm, impacting various industries and businesses. It is crucial for individuals to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and well-being during this challenging time.
