E-Vaporisers Disguised as Stationery: A Growing Concern in Singapore
In recent news, a disturbing trend has emerged involving e-vaporisers being disguised as everyday stationery items, such as markers and glue sticks. This deceptive practice has raised alarm among parents and teachers, as it allows users, particularly students, to smoke discreetly in school settings.
Health Authorities Take Action
The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) in Singapore has been proactive in addressing this issue. In collaboration with the Infocomm Media Development Authority, steps have been taken to block access to a Malaysia-based website selling e-vaporisers disguised as highlighters, which were available for delivery to Singapore.
The HSA spokeswoman has emphasized the importance of monitoring and surveillance to detect and remove illegal postings related to e-vaporisers on various e-commerce sites and social media platforms. More than 6,000 such postings have been taken down between January and September.
Rising Number of Offenders
Statistics from a joint statement by the Ministry of Health and HSA revealed a concerning trend in the illegal possession and use of e-vaporisers in Singapore. In the first half of 2024, around 5,480 individuals were caught for such offenses, a significant increase compared to previous years.
Notably, the number of offenders caught in 2023 was 7,838, showing a sharp rise from the figures in 2022. Among the 2024 offenders, approximately 690 were students referred to HSA by their schools.
Legal Consequences
First-time offenders who engage in activities such as importing, distributing, selling, or offering e-vaporisers for sale can face fines of up to $10,000, imprisonment for up to six months, or both. Repeat offenders may be subject to even harsher penalties, including fines of up to $20,000, imprisonment for up to 12 months, or both. Additionally, all prohibited tobacco items will be seized and confiscated.
