The Sabah and Labuan Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) recently made a significant seizure of a tugboat engaged in illegal fishing activities just 1.2 nautical miles northwest of Tanjung Kunit, Pulau Usukan waters in the Kota Belud district.

• The vessel was found to have approximately 700kg of fish on board during inspection.
• The tugboat violated its license terms for towing by operating under the 3 nautical mile limit.
• The boat also committed an offence under the Fisheries Act 1985 for fishing within less than 12 nautical miles as permitted.

  Maritime First Admiral Datuk Che Engku Suhaimi Che Engku Daik, the director of MMEA Sabah and Labuan, confirmed that a skipper and eight Indonesian boat crews were apprehended during the operation. They were brought to the maritime jetty in Sepanggar for further investigation.
