Canberra Hospital’s New Critical Services Building: A Game-Changer in Healthcare

On Saturday, August 17, 2024, Canberra Hospital unveiled its newest addition, the Critical Services Building, also known as Building 5. This state-of-the-art facility is set to revolutionize the way critical care services are delivered in the region, offering a wide range of services under one roof.

The Evolution of Critical Care Services

  • Building 5 now houses the main entry and reception, the emergency department, operating theatres, day of surgery admission, the Sterilising Services Unit, the intensive care unit, cardiac catheterisation laboratories, inpatient wards, medical imaging, and even a helideck.
  • With the consolidation of these services in one location, patients can expect more streamlined care and quicker access to life-saving treatments.

The New Emergency Department

The new Emergency Department in Building 5 is a significant upgrade from its predecessor in Building 12. Patients can now benefit from enhanced facilities and a more efficient layout designed to optimize emergency care delivery.

Navigating the New Building

  • If you find yourself in need of emergency care, head straight to Building 5. The ED has a separate entrance on the southern side of Hospital Road, off Bateson Road.
  • Parking is available in the southern multi-storey car park on Bateson Road, just a short walk from the ED entrance.
  • Clear signage throughout the hospital will guide you to the appropriate departments within Building 5.

A Seamless Transition

  • The move into Building 5 was a complex operation that involved relocating around 160 patients and over 3,000 pieces of equipment.
  • More than 3,000 staff members underwent specialized training to ensure a smooth transition to the new facility.
