Saudi Arabia has reevaluated its ambitious NEOM gigaproject to prioritize completing elements necessary for hosting global sporting events in the next decade due to increasing costs, sources revealed after the sudden exit of the project’s CEO. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has invested heavily in development projects through the kingdom’s PIF sovereign wealth fund. However, the top oil exporter has had to adjust its plans as low oil prices continue to impact its oil-reliant economy.
NEOM, a massive Red Sea urban and industrial development, plays a crucial role in the prince’s Vision 2030 plan to diversify the economy beyond oil. Originally announced in 2017, NEOM was envisioned as a high-tech development spanning over 26,500 square kilometers. One of its key features, “The Line,” incorporating hanging pathways, gardens, and a stadium, aims to operate on 100% renewable energy.
Currently, the focus is on completing a 2.4-kilometer stretch, including a stadium set to host the final match of the 2034 soccer World Cup. Additionally, the completion of Trojena, a mountain resort for the Asian Winter Games in 2029, is a priority. The project has been scaled down and segmented, with future plans subject to evaluation.
Despite tight deadlines and delays, project leaders are determined to deliver massive developments by the 2030 deadline. The recent departure of the CEO was reportedly due to the inability to meet key objectives. NEOM has not disclosed the reasons behind the CEO’s exit, but there are speculations of further resignations within the company.
Overall, the shift in focus towards sporting events indicates a strategic move to align NEOM with global events, potentially boosting its economic impact and visibility on the world stage. This adjustment underscores the importance of adaptability and prioritization in large-scale development projects, offering insights into the challenges and opportunities of such endeavors.
