The New Road Safety Camera in Canberra

On Wednesday, July 10th, a new fixed road safety camera will be operational at the intersection of Northbourne Avenue and Bunda Street in Canberra. This camera will be responsible for monitoring speed and red-light offences in the area.

Background Information

The camera at this intersection is not a new addition to the fixed camera network. It is actually a relocation of an existing camera that was previously installed at the intersection of London Circuit and Northbourne Avenue. The decision to move the camera to this new location was based on several factors, including:

  • Proximity to the bus interchange and light rail stop
  • High level of pedestrian movement in the area

Importance of Road Safety Cameras

Road safety cameras are crucial tools in detecting and deterring unsafe driving behaviors. They also play a significant role in improving pedestrian safety in town centers throughout Canberra. According to Emily Springett, the Executive Branch Manager of Service Delivery and Engagement at Access Canberra:

“Road safety cameras play an important role in supporting road safety in the ACT by reducing speeding on our roads and supporting the ACT Government’s Vision Zero strategy.”

Speed limits are set to strike a balance between safe and expedient travel. Studies have shown that even “low level” speeding can contribute to a significant percentage of road casualties and fatalities in the ACT.
