Canberra Hospital is on the brink of a significant transformation with the upcoming opening of the Critical Services Building in August. This new building, known as Building 5, will house a range of critical care services, revolutionizing the hospital campus and enhancing the healthcare experience for patients and visitors.
What to Expect in the Critical Services Building
Emergency Department (ED) with Dedicated Children’s Area
- The Emergency Department will be conveniently located at street level, providing easy access for patients in need of urgent care.
- A dedicated entrance with improved features will make pick-up and drop-off safer and more efficient.
- The ED is designed for future growth and will offer better connections to acute services, with direct lift access to the new Helipad.
- A separate children’s emergency area will ensure pediatric patients and their families can receive specialized care in a comforting environment.
Operating Theatres
- New state-of-the-art operating theatres on Level 3 will include hybrid and interventional radiology suites, allowing for the latest medical technologies to be utilized.
Sterilising Services Unit
- The centralised Sterilising Services Unit on Level 4 will feature the latest equipment and machinery, with direct lift access from the operating theatres for improved efficiency.
Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
- The ICU on Level 5 will expand its bed capacity over time to meet the growing health needs of the community.
- Outdoor terraces connected to the ICU will provide healing and recovery spaces for patients, along with a dedicated visitor courtyard to support families and carers.
Inpatient Cardiology Services
- Located on Level 6, the Cardiology services will include the Acute Cardiac Care Unit, Cardiac Catheter Lab, and Cardiac Day Unit.
- New facilities will accommodate more complex procedures such as cardiac electrophysiology and TAVI.
Inpatient Wards
- Levels 6 and 7 will house five inpatient wards, including surgical and medical beds for various specialties.
- Wards will cater to Acute Medical, Emergency General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, and Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery patients.
Medical Imaging
- While the main imaging suites will remain in Building 12, the Critical Services Building will offer additional facilities for X-ray, CT, ultrasound, and MRI services.
