The Journey of Dejan Andrevski: From Investment Banking to Running a Successful Convenience Store

Dejan Andrevski is not your average convenience store owner. With three degrees under his belt, a background in investment banking, and years of experience in tech startups, he has built Bruce Super Convenience into a household name in Canberra.

From Tech Startups to Convenience Store

Dejan’s journey into the world of convenience stores began in 2017 when he decided to take a different path after his last tech startup wrapped up. With a baby on the way and a need for more stable income, he stumbled upon an opportunity to purchase a small shop.

What started as a joke with his wife turned into a serious consideration as Dejan saw the potential in running his own business. He wanted to prove to himself that he could succeed without financial backers and take full ownership of his venture.

Today, Bruce Super Convenience is a well-known destination in Canberra, offering a variety of imported foods from the US and Europe. The store gained national attention when it was featured in the Daily Mail for stocking imported Biscoff Easter eggs.

A Tipping Point and Transition to E-Commerce

Despite the success of his brick-and-mortar store, Dejan faced a challenge when a new development threatened his business. A large supermarket was set to open across the street, prompting him to reevaluate his strategy and consider new opportunities.

With the help of an investment partner, Dejan explored the possibility of operating the supermarket but ultimately lost the bid to another buyer. This setback forced him to reassess his plans and look towards the future.

Seeking Support from CBASS

Turning to the Canberra Business Advice and Support Service (CBASS), Dejan sought guidance on expanding his online presence and transitioning to a full e-commerce model. With the support of experienced advisors like Candice and Anna, he gained valuable insights and perspective on his business.

CBASS, funded by the ACT Government, offers free business advice to emerging and established businesses in Canberra. Dejan credits their practical approach and industry knowledge for helping him navigate the challenges of transitioning his business.

Embracing the Future

On May 19th, Dejan closed the doors of the Bruce Super Convenience shopfront, marking a new chapter for his business. With a focus on growing his online store and exploring wholesale opportunities for imported products, he is determined to recreate the success of his physical store in the digital realm.
