The ACT Government Expands Electric Vehicle Fleet to Lead the Nation in Emission Reduction

Electric vehicles take advantage of the ACT’s 100 per cent renewable electricity supply to help reduce emissions from transport.

In Brief:

  • The ACT Government has added 10 more electric vehicles to its fleet.
  • Electric vehicles are better for the environment and cheaper to run.
  • Making your next car electric could save you money.

Canberra continues to lead the nation in supporting the uptake of electric vehicles (EVs). About 10 new electric vehicles are coming onto ACT roads every day. The ACT Government has recently introduced new EVs to its fleet, including a ute, two tipper trucks, a litter picking truck, and a delivery van.

These vehicles are part of a trial by City Services to explore environmentally friendly ways of providing essential services. In addition to these, four electric passenger vehicles have also been added to the fleet, bringing the total number of electric, plug-in hybrid, or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in the ACT Government fleet to over 400.

The trial aims to showcase the variety and availability of EVs for commercial use and promote their benefits to the local industry and community. The funding for these new vehicles comes from the ACT Government’s Social Cost of Carbon Fund and Zero Emission Government Fund, both focused on reducing emissions from government activities.

Making the Switch to Electric Vehicles

Zero-emission vehicles, like EVs, offer environmental benefits and are quieter than traditional petrol and diesel vehicles. In addition, they are more cost-effective to run. Making the switch to an electric car could save you approximately $18,000 in running costs over a decade and reduce your greenhouse gas emissions by about 3 tonnes per year.

  • The ACT Government provides incentives for individuals and businesses purchasing EVs.
  • New public chargers are being installed throughout the city, making charging EVs quick and convenient.

With over 9,100 EVs currently registered in Canberra, residents are quickly embracing this sustainable mode of transportation. If you’re considering transitioning to an electric vehicle but unsure where to begin, a helpful guide on EVs for beginners is available for reference.

Transportation accounts for over 60 per cent of the ACT’s emissions, underscoring the significant potential of electric vehicles in helping the region achieve its goal of net zero emissions by 2045.
