Tropical Storm Sara Causes Widespread Flooding in Honduras, Threatens Coffee Production

Residents in northern Honduras are facing devastating floods as Tropical Storm Sara brings heavy rains to the region. The storm, located near the Caribbean coast, is expected to dump between 15 and 25 inches of rain, with isolated areas receiving up to 35 inches.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center warns of “life-threatening and potentially catastrophic” flash flooding and mudslides. The storm could also impact coffee production in Honduras, a major exporter in Central America.

Over 1,000 people have sought shelter in evacuation centers, and the government has declared a national emergency. Officials are urging residents to stay away from flood-prone areas and take necessary precautions to stay safe.

Sara is currently packing winds of 50 mph, with the potential for slight strengthening in the coming days. Meteorologists predict the storm will move northwest towards Belize, bringing heavy rainfall to several countries in the region.
