The Impact of Alexander Maconochie Centre’s Production Nursery and Horticulture Program

Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC) detainees are making a significant impact on the environment through their involvement in an innovative program focused on climate-proofing the region. This program, led by the Production Nursery and Horticulture Program supervisor, Leigh, has been instrumental in restoring endangered grassy woodlands in the Yass region.

Empowering Detainees through Environmental Conservation

  • Seven individuals are employed in the AMC’s Production Nursery and Horticulture Program.
  • They have propagated approximately 3,000 native plants over the past year.
  • The Murrumbateman Landcare Group (MLG) selected native plant varieties known for their resilience to future climate conditions.
  • These plants, including eucalypts, wattles, shrubs, and groundcovers, were grown from seeds sourced locally and from other regions to ensure genetic diversity.
  • The initiative aims to enhance soil health on both private and public lands in the Yass region.

Building Skills and Confidence

The Production Nursery and Horticulture Program has been running for three years at the AMC, utilizing commercial grow houses and stock gardens on-site. This program provides detainees with the opportunity to learn valuable propagation techniques and contribute to environmental conservation efforts.

  • Participants have successfully raised species that previously struggled to thrive in the Murrumbateman region.
  • The program not only benefits the environment but also fosters personal growth and a sense of achievement among the detainees.
  • For many participants, these programs serve as more than just a way to pass time during their sentences; they open doors to future opportunities post-incarceration.

Community Collaboration for Positive Outcomes

The partnership between AMC and MLG exemplifies the synergy between rehabilitation efforts and community engagement, yielding positive results for both the environment and individuals involved.

“This partnership is a wonderful example of how collaboration can lead to positive outcomes for the environment and the individuals participating in the program,” stated Gill Hall, a Committee Member of MLG.
