The Challenges of Preparations for Helsinki Christmas Parade
Summary of Events
- Helsinki Christmas parade witnessed dangerous incidents on Saturday
- Crowd spilled onto tram tracks causing traffic delays
- Children slipped on tracks after trams passed by
- HSL communication officer Johannes Laitila cited inadequate preparations
During the Helsinki Christmas parade on Saturday, dangerous incidents occurred in the city center, as reported by Elisabeth Tiila who was present at the scene.
The crowd watching the parade spread from the sidewalk onto the tram tracks on Mannerheimintie street.
“I noticed that some children were slipping onto the tracks right after the tram passed by. It’s a miracle that no one slipped directly under the tram,” Tiila described the situation she witnessed on Saturday.
There were delays in tram traffic because the trams could not proceed on Mannerheimintie due to the large crowd, stated Johannes Laitila, the communication officer of Helsinki Regional Transport (HSL), on Sunday.
“The traffic was quite chaotic for a while in the center of Helsinki. Pedestrians should not be on the tram tracks.”
Alternate routes are always planned in advance in collaboration with the police and event organizers, Laitila explains.
However, he noted that the preparations for the Christmas parade were somewhat inadequate this time.
“Tram traffic had been diverted to alternate routes due to the procession. However, there were more people than expected, and as an emergency measure, more tram traffic had to be shifted to alternate routes,” he said.
Laitila pointed out that it is not possible to predict exactly how public events will unfold. He mentioned that it is not uncommon to have sudden changes in tram operations during such events.
“In this case as well, the actual number of people expected to show up was not known in advance,” he added.
