Canada Prepares Robust Response to Potential U.S. Tariffs, Says Finance Minister
TORONTO – Ottawa and the provinces are gearing up to respond forcefully if the incoming U.S. administration follows through on threats to impose tariffs on imports from Canada, according to Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Freeland, and the 10 provincial premiers have been strategizing on how to react should President-elect Donald Trump implement a 25% tariff on U.S. imports from Canada.
“If the United States were to unjustly impose tariffs on Canada, we will respond, and our response will be strong and effective,” Freeland assured reporters.
Trump’s proposed tariffs are contingent on Canada addressing issues related to drugs and migrants crossing the border.
Bloomberg revealed that Canada is exploring the possibility of export taxes on commodities such as uranium, oil, and potash.
While various retaliation options are being considered, a Canadian government source indicated that no decisions have been made yet.
Despite the need for a unified front, some provincial leaders are expressing dissatisfaction with the potential response.
Scott Moe, premier of Saskatchewan, criticized the idea of export taxes, calling it a “betrayal” by the Trudeau government, given the province’s production of oil, uranium, and potash.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also voiced opposition to cutting off energy exports to the U.S. or engaging in a tariff war with a key trading partner.
