Gold Prices Soar in 2025, Setting New Records – What Does This Mean for Your Finances?

2024 was a remarkable year for gold prices, with the precious metal hitting record highs 40 times. This momentum has carried over into 2025, with gold now surpassing $2,900 an ounce.

One might assume that these high prices would dampen demand for gold jewelry, but surprisingly, the impact has been minimal, especially in the United States.

A recent survey by Metals Focus revealed that gold jewelry demand in the U.S. has “held up better than expected” despite the soaring price of gold. The U.S. is the third-largest gold jewelry market globally, and it tends to be particularly price-sensitive. However, jewelry demand only saw a slight 4% decrease in weight terms in the fourth quarter of 2024.

In terms of value, gold jewelry demand reached a record $4 billion in Q4, according to the World Gold Council. Several factors contributed to sustaining gold jewelry demand:

  • A strong jobs market.
  • The holiday shopping season, even with tight budgets.
  • The conclusion of the presidential election in Q4.

“Even if retail stocks were not perceived as too low, areas of the supply chain reliant on imports did react to the price. It will be interesting to see if early 2025 sees a rebound in imports.”

While jewelry imports saw a significant drop of around 18%, the value of imports actually rose by 6%.

Looking ahead, researchers at Metals Focus expressed caution about jewelry demand for the remainder of 2025:

“Even if engagement numbers recover, the industry will still face the challenge of managing a growing number of pieces at higher prices, amidst ongoing political uncertainties. As a result, the full year could see a 13% decline from the peak of 2021 and potentially drop below 2019 levels.”

It is crucial to stay informed about these market trends and how they can impact your financial decisions in the coming months. Whether you are a gold investor or simply interested in the jewelry market, understanding these dynamics can help you navigate the changing landscape of the industry.
