The Importance of Indoor Air Quality for Health and Well-being
It is a well-known fact that we spend about 90% of our time indoors, making the quality of the air we breathe crucial for our health and well-being. Ensuring clean air indoors can only be achieved through proper ventilation. Failure to regularly and correctly ventilate a space can lead to the accumulation of numerous small, invisible but harmful particles that enter our bodies through breathing. Individuals who spend a significant amount of time in spaces with poor air quality often report feeling tired, having trouble concentrating, experiencing headaches, irritated mucous membranes, and overall feeling unwell.
The Link Between Clean Air and Healthy Living
It is essential to understand that clean indoor air is not just a matter of comfort but a fundamental requirement for healthy and quality living. The cleanest air in a room can be achieved through proper ventilation systems, which, unlike traditional window opening, allow for continuous air exchange. This prevents harmful substances such as dust, allergens, and other particles from accumulating in the space. Additionally, ventilation systems help maintain optimal air temperature and humidity, further ensuring a pleasant and healthy living environment. It is crucial to choose a system that meets our needs and spatial conditions, so consulting with an expert beforehand is advisable.

For many years, the successful LUNOS company in Slovenia has been led by director Mag. Uroš Fonovič. We spoke with him about the air we breathe, the importance of quality ventilation, the company’s growth and development, and plans for the future, among other topics.
Why is it advantageous for you that the development and production of LUNOS systems are based in Germany, with over 65 years of experience in the ventilation industry?
LUNOS GmbH, headquartered in Berlin, has been setting standards in the ventilation industry for over 65 years, developing and manufacturing all devices exclusively in Germany. This ensures exceptional technical sophistication, stable quality, and long-term reliability – crucial aspects for ventilation systems. Previously, LUNOS was represented in the Slovenian market by an external distributor, but for strategic reasons and a desire for higher market quality, the company restructured its presence and established its subsidiary, LUNOS d. o. o., where LUNOS GmbH holds an 80% ownership stake. This direct presence allows us to fully embody the philosophy of the parent company and offer Slovenian customers better support and tailored solutions.
Since last year, you have also been responsible for expanding your presence in the Adriatic region, including setting up local offices. What steps have been taken so far?
After a successful first year of operation of LUNOS d. o. o. in Slovenia, we quickly recognized the potential of the wider region. We established a subsidiary, LUNOS Sistemi d. o. o., in Zagreb, which is already actively operating in the Croatian market. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, we collaborate with a local distributor and are in the final stages of agreements with partners in Serbia and Hungary. Our goal is to establish local offices and networks that adhere to LUNOS GmbH standards, while providing fast and professional support to users, designers, and installers.
What do your field measurements show – what kind of air do we have in homes and offices? Are we sufficiently aware of the importance of air quality? And what about abroad – who can serve as a role model for us?
In many spaces, there are high concentrations of CO₂, elevated relative humidity, often mold traces, and odors due to poor air circulation. These issues are particularly pronounced in well-insulated buildings without proper ventilation. With modern decentralized ventilation solutions from LUNOS, we can improve living conditions without major interventions and contribute to the long-term health of users, both in new constructions and existing buildings.
While awareness is gradually improving, it has not yet reached the level expected given its impact on health. Ventilation is still not a mandatory part of all energy renovations and often remains overlooked. In other countries, such as Germany, Denmark, Austria, and Scandinavia, indoor air quality is considered a fundamental right. Ventilation systems are legally required in new constructions and even subsidized. Such models can help us set higher standards at home.
Consumers are becoming increasingly conscious and, therefore, more focused on the sustainable aspect of products. How does your company’s sustainability orientation manifest itself?
Sustainability is a central pillar of LUNOS’ operations. All our devices are designed for low energy consumption, long lifespan, and easy maintenance. We use recycled materials, wear-free motors, and recyclable aluminum in production. The systems are modular and can be gradually upgraded, reducing waste.
Aside from technical aspects of sustainability, we also invest in local networks and support, reducing the need for long supply chains and increasing the overall energy efficiency of our operations. We also encourage sustainable usage, including optimal device operation, when advising clients.
What are your plans for the future?
Our plans revolve around long-term growth, expansion, and innovation. In Slovenia, we continue to strengthen local presence, expand our professional and installation network, and raise awareness about the importance of quality ventilation. We will extend the LUNOS business model to other countries in the region with our infrastructure or partnerships.
Our long-term goal goes beyond mere expansion. The vision of LUNOS is to remain a leading global innovator in decentralized ventilation, creating a healthy living space with smart, sustainable, and human-friendly solutions for every generation and environment. We view ventilation as a fundamental right to quality living and health, not a luxury.
