The Transformation of Literacy and Numeracy Education in ACT Public Schools

The landscape of education in ACT public schools is undergoing a significant transformation, with a focus on improving literacy and numeracy education for students. Alyssa Owen, the newly appointed literacy and numeracy leader at Calwell Primary School, is at the forefront of this initiative.

Overview

  • The Strong Foundations program is revolutionizing the way public schools approach learning.
  • By 2026, all ACT public schools will implement evidence-informed methods for teaching literacy and numeracy.
  • Literacy and numeracy leaders play a crucial role in guiding this educational shift.

ACT public schools are moving towards a system-wide approach to education, with a clear vision of all schools utilizing evidence-based methods for teaching literacy and numeracy by 2026. Alyssa Owen and her colleagues are spearheading this transformation to create a more engaging and accessible learning experience for all students.

Literacy and Numeracy Leaders Collaborate

In March, the literacy and numeracy leaders from ACT public schools convened for their inaugural meeting. Professor Barney Dalgarno, the Executive Dean of the University of Canberra and Chair of the ACT Literacy and Numeracy Education Expert Panel, shared the Expert Panel’s recommendations and key findings with the leadership group. He discussed how these insights can be effectively integrated into K–6 classrooms across all public schools in the ACT.

These leaders are instrumental in driving the implementation of the Strong Foundations program, which aims to revolutionize literacy and numeracy education in schools.

Benefits for Students and Teachers

Throughout the year, Alyssa and her colleagues will continue to collaborate on curriculum development, teaching strategies, and lesson planning. This ongoing dialogue provides valuable professional development opportunities for teachers while ensuring consistency in the learning experience for students.

Alyssa emphasizes the importance of building confidence in reading, writing, and mathematics for every student. By supporting her colleagues in creating engaging and accessible learning environments, she aims to empower all students at Calwell Primary School.
